Christopher Kennedy

Subjective Attitudes and Counterstance Contingency

This talk examines the tension between characterizing language as a
system for describing the world vs. a system for communicating subjective
perspective. By focusing on the interaction of subjective attitude verbs and
scalar predicates, it will be argued that a resolution of this tension must
incorporate a model of language users’ awareness of the arbitrariness of
choices they make about how to resolve uncertainty about meaning in a
communicative context.
Scalar Accomplishments
This talk presents the “scalar” approach to aspectual composition
developed in Kennedy and Levin 2008 and Kennedy 2012, and shows how it
provides a new and unified way of understanding two kinds of variability in
the meaning of accomplishment predicates cross-linguistically: the
distinction between “weak” and “strong” accomplishments in Hungarian and
the properties of so-called “non-culminating” accomplishments in languages
like Hindi and Mandarin.
